Minority Health Fair
For the past three-years, the Chattanooga Alumni Chapter and Omega Psi Phi
Fraternity, Inc., Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc., in collaboration with the 28th
Legislative Community Development Corporation, have partnered together to sponsor the
Annual Hamilton County Minority Health Fair. The theme for this event is "Empowering
and Educating Minorities to Close the Health Gap." According to health data published by the Department of Health and Human Services for individuals in the United States, African-Americans are:
30% more likely to die of cancer than White Americans
More than twice as likely to die of diabetes than White Americans
30% more likely to die of heart disease than White Americans
40% more likely to die of strokes than White Americans
These are statistics that can drastically change with careful screening and education of health care issues in the minority and low-income communities. Individuals and families can take many steps to improve their health and the health of their loved ones. This health fair will provide a number of health screenings and health education opportunities that will allow participants earlier entry into the health care arena and possibly decrease major health care disparities.
These services are provided free to all participants. Over 700 people attended the 2005 Hamilton County Minority Health Fair. There are over 150 volunteers for this event. We receive financial sponsorship from the major hospitals in Chattanooga, BlueCross BlueShield of Tennessee and others. The 2006 Minority Health Fair will be held Saturday, August 19, 2006.
